What's that? Gray bodies breaking the fog
Turn, the wind is casting our lot
We're caught upon the dashing rocks
Oh land? Just our tiny barren island
All smoke. The tinder's soaked but we're dry to the bone
And handing me his compass he downright up and left us

I was born on the shore where the storm struck
The windows were boarded up tightly
And I was carried on the mud of a flood
That carved rivers right through this bright valley
With both hands in my pockets
And this story I was carrying
I was born with the longing of a song
Sung to lift onto freedom these weary
And I'll be buried in the ground of this place
As our histories paper my lined face
With both hands in my pockets
And this story I was carrying
Where we all go for dancing
Where we all go for fun
Where we all go quiet in the end

Try to read me
Hold me up to a light
Pour me into a cup
And it won't make you whole
You know your voice
It sounds so strage when your eyes are closed
And everything sounds very strange
When your eyes are closed
And there are coastlines and state lines
There are landmines and countries
And I could outline my hairline and
Measure every one of my toes
I could diagram my diaphragm
and chart out my blood flow

The Moat

Turn it all still
Onwards we ravage and spur on the trail
Whose carving brought the hunters a fox and his tail
You moon at the treetops and spread your arms wide
And wonder if the truffle could care for the swine
The new-creased pleats are bending
Under forces never-ending
From the lifted toe to the pointed knee
We thread our hook between the trees
So let the cowardice take and the bravery make
The beds that we lie in
Although the constant bore of the redundant chore
Shows the love you've been given
And with the creaking knee beneath the living tree, we press on
As if the wandering kite could muster the might
To tell us "Don't go on"
We let the cheap-seats sell, turn the moat to a well
And let the blood go, what's bleeding?
And if our ship starts tacking, star-crossed we are lacking
A feeling not fleeting
Turn it off still it's too late
Turn it all still

The moon spilled over in your paper cup, a drink to all the tides
'keeper calls time to settle up, we'll pay him for the time
Thumbnail hangs from the fingertip, you're grasping at the lights
The sun-drunk stupor bought a broken truck
We'll blame it on the oak-burned barrels
Full of only the good stuff, you already know the joke
Curved road turns to a verdant trough, I'll race you to the top
Comet comes over just as you broke through
Alighting on your eye
Sky turned dark just as we came to; a glass without a lime
Swinging our legs out over the dune, together passing time
If dawn's the precipice, we slip
For now we are the night
When do you know you've had enough?
But you carry on, Eukaryote

This here stone came up from below
He must know the most about the ocean beneath us
Listen here, to the deep and lonely tone from ancient time
The note, I know is bound to outlive us
We'll tune our ears as we won't be leaving here
Study the stone, hand me the rope
I'll weave our broken bow again
With bellies full we're kindred souls, the rock and the fools
Death, the ground where your island began
